good question! i think it has to do with the current level of trust in God held by people in general. The theme of the justice of God is much more prevalent in literature from the early 1900's than say 1999 and beyond. I think it has to do with immediate gratification. If people can't have a lightning bolt they think they've got to take matters into their own hands, and be the bringers of God's justice.
